I remember sitting at the kitchen table. I was working from home at the time. The sun was shining on my back and a neighbor was helping install a door into the great room. My children were at school and I was trying to focus on work so I could devote myself to them once they were home. The problem was I just couldn’t concentrate. Worse, I couldn’t stop crying, even in front of my neighbor. He asked me if I was okay. Was I? In my head I knew I had so much to be grateful for; two amazing children and a wonderful husband, a beautiful home, good friends, and my faith. It didn’t make sense! I just couldn’t figure out why I was so sad. I had no interest in anything I loved anymore and all I wanted to do was go to sleep. I knew then, in that moment, something was seriously wrong and I needed help. I am grateful that between my faith and my doctor I was able to get my depression under control. It turns out a chronic medical condition and a severe vitamin D deficiency had played a significant role in affecting my mental health. I’m sharing my story because it is important that everyone understands mental health issues aren’t anything to be ashamed of. It can happen to anyone and the more we know and understand about the different causes and effects of different mental health disorders, the more we can do to help each other and the less we have to fear.
